The path is safe, for leads between
What is there and what is seen
Safe is good for those who fear
Afraid to lose what they hold dear
Path is worn for many tread
Many are who live in dread
Loss and pain from things unknown
But beauty is where wonder sown
Few would leave this path of light
Fewer still see stars at night
Wonder dwells not where it’s safe
Magic fills this wayward waif
I would leave this path behind
Seeking light I pray I find
A world unknown to thee and me
Off the path my soul is free

These lines gave me goosebumps and filled me with hope. I prefer the path lit by stars and free of arrows pointing the way . . . better yet I love to tread where there is no path at all.
As always, your words are so inspiring and befitting of a free spirit.
There won’t be many my friend, but I’ll see “you” off the beaten path.
I hear you…
Nice to see you here, meet you for lunch somewhere over the next hill?
your words give me tears..thank you, angel John…
I write for you dear Brynne, and all my wonderful friends and crew. I write because I want you all to know how I feel about you, and want to share my love of words and writing with those most dear. Thank you… all of you.
Oh yes, you do. We/I sense your intentions and thats why I was so very moved. Your heart is so very kind and caring and open…for all of us, your crew. We are so very very blessed to have you for our Captain.
It’s so nice to know another poet who takes the path “less traveled”.
Here’s to pirates blazing new trails!
Thar be dragons off the path me fellow Pirate, let’s go find some!!
. . . he says, as he rolls the paper into the typewriter and begins his newest journey . . .
uhhh…. was there some subtle or subliminal message, hidden within your words?
Wait…you use a typewriter?! I’ve heard about those things….
No typewriter for me, or even paper. It’s all ethernet and keyboard on this Pirate ship.
Be there unicorns as well ??
Unicorns for certain, as well as fairies, monsters, legends and mystery. All things fey and mysterious, dwell off well worn paths. Not just creatures though, for King Arthur, Guenevere, Gulliver, the Mad Hatter and all manner of magic dwells in forest deep and lands mysterious. Care to join me in a moonlit stroll in a magical glade?
Don’t you mean “Guinevere” ???
What about Robin Hood ?
Minotaurs ?
Yales?
Wassermen?
Kelpies?
Bunyips?
Yes, Guinevere (darn that auto-correct spell check). I hope to see all those and more.
Oh yeah – and The Boys ???
Can they come too ???
Don’t forget pegasuses…or is that pegasi? And griffons, and mermaids and centaurs…oh my! Yeah, sounds like a real adventure, for certain! Sign me up!
Sign you up? You’re the expedition leader.
Yep the Cap’n has it right methinks…anyone connected with dragons best be being up the front of the line…
Well, aye, okay then. We need a map, though. Cap’n do you have a pirate map that shows the way? And what about a special sort of compass? Or does that rest with One-Eyed Willie in Goonies territory?
Just don’t hold it out in front of the dragon or we’ll be toast…
I say give it to the dragon, we don’t need no stink’n map.
Map? We’re off the path dear friend, we don’t want a map!
The only way to find new places is to go where where you’ve never been before and often as not, where you’re not supposed to go. I like going places where no one has gone before, so maps be few and far between.
Oh.. and I love One-Eyed Willie.
Certainly, but if TB’s come, I expect to lose you and they into some dark bramble, lost to the rest of us except for the giggles and gasps. Do I have the right of it?
never giggles…
You tell’n me you can’t get TB’s to giggle? I just assumed that was one of your many talents.
Oh they giggle all right – just not when lost in the brambles…

Invited? Its their domain we tread within friend. They are our host once we leave the path. Can’t believe you left out the Dodo bird and the Coelacanth.
It appears i am a bit of a Dodo myself apparently…I also forgot thr Ogopogo…shame, shame, shame !!
The reason i said ‘Invited’ is that some of these guys live in far off places and may need to travel, while others are quite shy…you know the whole ‘keep the humans guessing if we exist or not’ thing…so I thought we might need to reassure them that their secrets would be kept guarded from other eyes…
Ahhh… excellent point my friend. You are one brilliant Kiwi/Aussie, or is that being redundant?
Wow, we have a complete A-Z guest list! Right on! The brownies said they’d come, too, as soon as they were done swimming in their current barrel of ale.
Ale – did someone say ale ???? Where…when…what colour ???
Saying I’m brilliant is NEVER redundant…
Great poem and a terrific post, John. I love how you show the picture after the poem. In this case, especially, it makes the reader say, “Oh wow!” Perfect!

Thanks Charles, I knew you were another ‘off the path’ kinda person.
What an amazing write, I so enjoyed!
Thanks, if it drew you here, it was worth the effort.
Love it. Heading off the path now
Excellent, see you in the mysterious woods!
You have such a knack for writing a perfect poem suiting your photo. It leads me to ask, which comes first the photo or the poem?
A magical poem as always Cap’n, one which makes one dream.
Thanks Cheryl. I usually find an image I like, or that moves me in some way, then I write whatever spills out of my mind. This one though was written before I found the image. That happens about 25% of the time.
When the student is ready, a master’s pen can always be found!
Perfect timing for me to come across your words Cap’n ;-D
I would leave this path behind
Seeking light I pray I find
A world unknown to thee and me
Off the path my soul is free
Many thanks for penning & sharing them!
Well, I don’t think I can be the teacher, since I get sent to the Principle’s office so often, but I’m really glad you enjoyed it.
There you go again, proving that you left “the” path and thus being able to lead the way for others…LOL!
To have gotten the chance to cross yer path Cap’n, makes me one happy lil scarabee ;-D
Have a helluva GREAT day my friend <3
